For the love of (Free!) Food… Slimming World members share their most-loved recipes in national cook off

Slimming World is calling members across the UK and Ireland to create a brand-new recipe to add to its collection as part of the new Free Food Festival campaign.

Slimming World’s Free Food Festival takes place in Slimming World groups in February and encourages members to celebrate all the delicious ‘Free Food’ they can enjoy freely on plan to satisfy their appetite.

Free Food at Slimming World is food that is highly satisfying and naturally low in calories – like lean meat, eggs, fish, pasta, potatoes, fruit and vegetables – so members can eat and enjoy real, delicious, everyday food in generous portions and lose weight without ever going hungry. Slimming World’s philosophy was founded on the invention and development of Free Food, and the consequent freedom and liberation from hunger, guilt and shame that was once – and still often is – associated with losing weight.

In all 19,000 groups from w/c Feb 9th to w/c Feb 16th, members will be encouraged to cook, share and win with Free Food cook-offs. Every group will select a best winning recipe and the winning member will be entered into a national competition to find the best new Slimming World recipe. Ten finalists will then be invited to Slimming World’s Derbyshire head office for the final competition.

Winner of the Great British Bake Off 2019, David Atherton, will be a judge for the national final of the competition along with Slimming World HQ head chef Ruth Butler and Slimming World’s Head of Food and Publications Allison Brentnall.

After the final, the top three winners will have their recipes featured in Slimming World Magazine with the chance to win one of three cash prizes:

  • 1st place - £1,000/€1,300
  • 2nd place - £500/€650
  • 3rd place - £250/€325

David Atherton, winner of the Great British Bake Off 2019, says: “Cooking is a huge passion of mine so I’m really excited to be part of this campaign. Experimenting with new flavour combinations and inspiring new ideas is a really great way to get people cooking from scratch again, which is really important when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I can’t wait to see which dishes are created as part of Slimming World’s Free Food Festival – it’s making me feel hungry already!"

Allison Brentnall, Head of Food & Publications
Allison Brentnall, Head of Food and Publications at Slimming World and a judge for the national competition, says: “At Slimming World we know you don’t have to stop loving food to start losing weight. We made that breakthrough 50 years ago and it’s changed the way the whole world looks at slimming. Our concept of Free Food has changed the lives of millions of Slimming World members and we’re sure it will continue to do so for years to come.

“When new members join, they often can’t believe how much food they can eat and still lose weight. With our healthy Food Optimising eating plan, there is no need to miss out on your favourite meals and by picking up ideas shared by other members in group, our members never go hungry and learn loads about food and cooking. New members soon discover they can still enjoy burgers and chips, spaghetti Bolognese and curries – all packed full of Free Food, of course. We can’t wait to see the dishes created as part of Slimming World’s Free Food Festival – and to crown our national winner.”
Allison Brentnall, Head of Food & Publications

A brand-new recipe book will also be launched to members showcasing 60 favourite Free recipes. ‘Slimming World’s A-Z of Free Food’ will launch on 9th February as part of a Countdown offer (commit to 12 weeks of slimming and get two weeks free.), before going on sales to all members.

About Slimming World

Slimming World

Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell (OBE, FRSA) in 1969. There are now more than 19,000 weekly groups supporting 900,000 members across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Groups are run by a network of 5,000 community-based Slimming World Consultants, who receive specific training in the role of diet and physical activity in weight management, as well as sophisticated behaviour-change techniques. Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, is based on the science of satiety and energy density. Our phased activity programme, Body Magic, eases members into activity until it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily routine. The principles behind Slimming World’s philosophy are based on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by people who are overweight and recognition that those who struggle with weight carry a double burden, the weight itself and a burden of guilt and shame about their weight. Slimming World’s programme integrates practical, up-to-date advice with a highly developed support system based on care and compassion, and Consultant training focuses on facilitating, encouraging and empowering members to make changes in a supportive, warm and friendly group environment. Consultant training is delivered through the Slimming World Academy. Slimming World also invests in a comprehensive research programme to develop its support for long-term weight management. The group support provided by Slimming World is recognised as effective by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.
