Laura runs Race for Life in memory of her uncle
A Slimming World Consultant from Solihull has completed a 5km charity run in honour of her uncle who she lost to cancer.
Laura Moore, 35, lost her uncle Gordon to cancer in 2017 and always promised herself that she would one day run Race for Life for him to raise money for Cancer Research UK in his memory.
This year she discovered the Solihull Race for Life event was on the eleventh anniversary of his death on 11th June, so she knew she had to sign up.
Laura is a Slimming World Consultant and runs a group in Elmdon every Saturday. Her members joined her to take part in a recent Race for Life event and together they raised an amazing £2,500.
Laura says: “It was a great day despite the heat, and I have been blown away by my members’ efforts. I’m so proud of them and everything they’ve achieved in losing weight and becoming more active.
“I hope my uncle was looking down on me and beaming with pride as I crossed the finish line; I know that he would be so pleased with the work that I do to help others achieve their dreams.”
Laura became a Slimming World Consultant after losing 2st herself and has remained at her target weight for the past two and a half years.
Before losing weight, Laura noticed that her clothes were getting tighter, and she was starting to need the next size up. She decided to join her local Slimming World group and took her two sisters along with her for support. Laura says: “Walking through those doors was a lot less daunting knowing that my sisters were by my side. I knew I wanted to make a change to my unhealthy habits and had heard great success stories from people who joined Slimming World."
“From the start, I really liked the concept of Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising and embraced it immediately. I lost 6lbs in my first week. I wasn’t expecting such a quick result, and that really spurred me on to stick it out and reach my target weight."
“My Slimming World group helped me to take a proper look at my eating habits. It was obvious I wasn’t eating enough fruit and vegetables, and I was keen to change that.”
Laura found making small changes, such as not cooking with oil and reaching for fruit or high-fibre cereal bars as a snack if she was hungry between meals, made a big difference and were easy to incorporate into her life. Laura hasn’t had to give up foods she loves either – she still enjoys cooking her favourite curries but now opts for a low-calorie cooking spray instead of oil.
As well as changing her eating habits, Laura embraced Slimming World’s physical activity support programme, Body Magic, and enjoyed setting herself goals to increase her fitness levels. So when Laura heard that Slimming World was sponsoring Cancer Research UK’s (CRUK) Race for Life, that was another goal she decided to set herself and her members.
Laura says: “I’ve dropped two dress sizes but joining Slimming World hasn’t just changed my physical appearance, my confidence has grown so much too. I’ve gained the confidence to stand in front of a camera, rather than shying behind it, I feel great in my clothes, and I love my role as a Consultant.”
Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE in Derbyshire in 1969 and has become the UK and Ireland’s leading weight loss organisation with more people choosing to attend a Slimming World group each week than any other weight loss programme. We support hundreds of thousands of people, both in our groups and online, to lose weight and to adopt new habits to stay slim for life.
Over the years our founding principles haven’t changed:
· Our unique programme is based on a powerfully motivating support system called IMAGE (Individual Motivation and Group Experience) Therapy. Underpinned by a deep understanding of the psychology of overweight people, and incorporating the most effective sustainable behaviour change techniques, IMAGE Therapy is designed to inspire and motivate slimmers to make positive changes and to develop new, healthier habits around food and activity.
· Food Optimising is our healthy eating plan, based on the liberating concept of Free Food. We encourage our members to fill up on those foods that are naturally lower in energy density (calories per gram) and also highly satisfying while limiting foods that are highest in fat and sugar and are less satisfying, so they lose weight without ever feeling hungry or deprived and without having to weigh, measure or count everything they eat.
· Our activity programme, Body Magic, encourages members to become more active, more often in ways that they enjoy, until regular physical activity becomes an intrinsic part of daily routine.
· Above all, at the heart of everything we do, lies our passion for treating every member with genuine care, empathy and respect.
We’re proud to work with the NHS, Public Health England, The Royal College of Midwives and others to help shape the future of weight management in the UK.
